Indian Head Massage
What is Indian Head Massage?
Indian head massage is an ancient therapeutic treatment that has been practised in India for thousands of years and is part of the Hindu healthcare practice of Ayurveda.
It focuses on your head, neck and shoulders and was used originally to improve scalp and hair condition.
It is a deep massage, using variable pressure and techniques, which include circular massage strokes on your scalp, deep tissue work on your shoulders, and stretching the neck.
Indian head massage focuses on the three higher "chakras" - mind, body and spirit and as such hits your energy epicentre.
To say that a good Indian head massage will relax you is an understatement - it's much more than this.
It will make you feel detached and serene, it'll leave you sighing and wordless, but also alert and clear-headed, alleviating any brain-fog and stress.
It relieves aches, pains and tension in your back neck and shoulders but also improves the texture of your hair and encourages it to grow.
Indian head massage stimulates the flow of blood, oxygen and lymphatic fluid in your upper body, therefore, it will clear your sinuses, relieve you from stress and help you sleep better.
And because it is said to cure headaches (even migraines), eye strain and anxiety, a well planned Indian head massage can help you concentrate better at work.
What to Expect
After completing a short form you'll be taken to your treatment room where you will be given instructions on how to prepare for the treatment.
Using soft massage techniques your therapist will warm-up the areas they will be working on.
The main focus throughout the course of your treatment will be to restore balance and harmony on the three higher chakras.
In Sanskrit, these areas are called Vissuddha (the base of the throat), Ajna (the forehead) and Sahasrara (the crown).
A chakra ("wheel" or "disk") is a centre of vital energy in the form of a lotus flower.
The head of the "flower" is found at the front of the body and the stem is thought to go through the central spinal column.
There are seven chakras situated throughout the body, starting with the root chakra at the base of the spine and ending with the crown chakra - just above the head.
When your therapist balances the top three chakras, the rest will vibrate in balance resulting in perfect health and well-being.
Indian head massage will feel almost like a reflexology massage, which is performed on the feet but is felt throughout the entire body.
This is because there are several important pressure points on the head.
Some of the massage will be quite firm - it can be an odd sensation to have your skull massaged - but stick with it.
You will feel really relaxed and serene afterwards.
The results are definitely worth it.
After this treatment you will feel amazing: relaxed, serene, ache-free, clear-headed, ready to tackle that important work meeting, run the children around the park, or fall asleep immediately, depending on the kind of essential oils used!
